Our Story

Lack of food due to intensive farming, the loss of roost and nest sites, road mortality and rat poison have all put the future of the Barn Owl in jeopardy.

The Powys Species Habitat and Protection Group was established in 2006 to help alleviate the threats to barn owls through protection of their habitat and establishment of nesting opportunities.

Groups of volunteers across the UK, including our own, have contributed to a Barn Owl success story: where numbers have nearly tripled since the 1980’s. But the story doesn’t end here. With the overwhelming majority of UK Barn Owls now breeding in man-made nest boxes and climate change threatening to reverse any progress, it is essential that we continue to protect sites and habitats to secure the future of the enigmatic Barn Owl.

What We Do

Building homes

Nesting site loss was a major cause of Barn Owl decline so our volunteers countless hours in the workshop making, improving, and installing nest boxes.

Repairing homes

It’s estimated that 75% of UK Barn Owls now nest in man-made boxes. If all those boxes fell down, we’d probably see the extinction of the Barn Owl! So we work tirelessly to maintain our boxes across Powys.

Rehabilitation

Sadly, many birds are injured by road collisions or nest falls. Our volunteers look after sick and injured wildlife with the aim of returning them to the wild. If you find an injured owl or bird, please get in contact.

Monitoring populations

We monitor and record bird populations across Powys and submit our records to the BTO. The records highlight vulnerable populations and species and guide conservation efforts. They also provide a valuable indicator of change in other wildlife and the state of our countryside.

Other Wildlife

The tireless efforts of our volunteers stretch beyond Barn Owls. We have a number of nest box schemes across Powys that help maintain and increase the numbers of bird populations, including some rare and threatened species.
